The benchmarks are in for Doom 3!! Looks like ATI's X800 received a serious can of whoop-ass courtesy of nVidia's 6800. It's a close call between the ATI 9800 and the nVidia 5950, though they will both handle the game with relative ease. I don't see the need to upgrade our 5950s for this game, it can handle it at over-film frame rates which is good enough for me. Maybe next year we'll need to pick up 6800s for more advanced games (are there even any planned? - besides Demonik that is
).

Sweet. I've got the 5950 and Mel's got the 9800. And Paul, I think you'll end up with the 9800 because I think that's what was on the Sony.
And it's great news about the 6800 kicking the X800's tushy since I think Dean just bought a X800 for his Alienware overhaul. I feel warm all over. I should be able to sleep like a baby tonight.
I never have liked ATI, they've always seemed sort of weaselly to me. Not that that would stop me from having one but I prefer nVidia. I think nVidia was in a bit of a slump with the 5xxx series of cards but with the launch of the 6800 they've definately pulled themselves out of the proverbial hole in the ground.
Actually Mel has the 5950 as well. I found out last night as I was reinstalling drivers. And you should give her your ATI speech cuz she seemed a little miffed when I told her she had an Nvidia. I told her what you said about the Doom 3 benchmarks but you cain't tell her nothing when she's on a rant.
